Frequently Asked Questions — Easy Being Green Carbon Offsets

Is there an environmental issue?

The single largest environmental threat our world faces is climate change. The increase in Carbon Dioxide (CO2) in the atmosphere is a direct consequence of mankind. If left unmanaged, we will see irreversible economic, social and environmental impacts. Australians have one of the highest greenhouse gas emissions per capita in the world, so we all need to do our bit to address this now.

It is strongly recommended that every household across Australia look at reducing their environmental impact by:

  • Implementing ways to use less
  • Choose the best accredited environmental products like GreenPower
  • Offset the rest, for what you can not reduce.

What are carbon emissions and where do they come from?

Carbon emissions are released into our atmosphere as a result of our daily activities. Using electronic devices at home, driving the car or traveling by plane, are all contributors to increased CO2 in the atmosphere. When we burn fossil fuels like coal, CO2 (a greenhouse gas) is emitted and this acts like a blanket around the Earth. This effectively results in the overheating of the planet causing irreversible changes to the climate.

What is carbon offsetting?

Carbon offsets allow you to counterbalance your own greenhouse gas emissions. Offsets are generated from accredited initiatives that that reduce greenhouse gas emissions. By offsetting your emissions, you are contributing towards these emission reduction programs. This means that for every tonne of CO2 that is emitted, one tonne of CO2-e (carbon dioxide equivalent) is prevented from entering the atmosphere. When you pay Easy Being Green to offset one tonne, Easy Being Green purchase an undertaking for one tonne CO2-e emission reduction to occur from a third party.

How do I calculate my CO2 emissions?

Easy Being Green along with Jon Dee has developed a "carbon calculator" that helps you assess your carbon impact. The calculator can be used in two ways:

  1. High level assessment based on Australian averages; or a
  2. Detailed assessment based on your historic consumption and behavior.

How are the CO2 emissions calculated?

When calculating the CO2 emissions from your activities, we use government published figures to convert units of energy to CO2 emissions.

House Offsets are based on approximate CO2 emissions from an average home according to each state.

Car Offsets are based on approximate CO2 emissions for small, medium, large and hybrid cars driving 15,000km per year.

Flight Offsets are based on approximate CO2 emissions of domestic and international travel distances on return flights.

Where does my money go when I offset?

Easy Being Green commits to purchasing the carbon credits accredited by government agencies such the NSW Greenhouse Gas Abatement Scheme and the Australian Greenhouse Office. These programs aim to broaden the basis for investment in greenhouse gas abatement and engage business and consumers on climate change issues. This way you can be confident that you get what you pay for and make a positive difference.

How can I be sure that you are making the CO2 reductions that you claim?

Easy Being Green ensures that the credits you purchase are from credible sources and that you are making a real difference. Easy Being Green uses the Greenhouse Gas protocol published by the World Business Council for Sustainable development and the World Resources Institute, the Australian and International Standard AS ISO 14064 and the methodology used by the Australian Greenhouse Office in its Greenhouse Friendly program which is based on the ANZS ISO 14040 series of standards.

Our product is independently audited and the results can be made available on request. This way we can prove you get what you pay for.

What happens after I offset?

Once you have assessed your carbon offset, selected and paid for an offset package, you will receive a certificate that shows how many tonnes of carbon credits Easy Being Green surrendered on your behalf. You will also receive a tax invoice for your purchase. Once purchased, Easy Being Green surrenders the carbon credit to the NSW Greenhouse Gas Abatement Scheme. This ensures that the carbon cannot be used again or traded by anyone else.

What do I have to do to offset and how do I pay?

The assessment can be as detailed as you want it to be. Some customers prefer to use the Australian averages whilst others use their historic electricity bills, gas bills, vehicle logs and flight details. All you have to do is:

  1. Log onto the Easy Being Green web site to calculate your carbon footprint.
  2. Go through the questions and answer the questions as accurately as possible
  3. Once you have answered all the questions the program will automatically calculate the amount of carbon that you need to offset.

You can then choose what you want to offset and purchase the carbon credit on line by supplying your Visa, Mastercard or Amex card details and we'll take care of the rest.

How long am I offsetting emissions for?

The calculations we use are based on annual consumption and emissions.
The program is designed to offset future usage so historic data is the best means of accurately calculating possible usage patterns.

Will I receive a receipt / tax invoice?

Yes, always trying to decrease our environmental impact we will email a receipt/ tax invoice to the address you provide once your transaction is complete.

Is the product a tax deduction?

No it is not.

Who can use the program?
